Partner with Hack Collective Hamburg

Every other Monday, a room full of students in Hamburg spends an evening on one machine-learning problem. Companies join that room as partners: they sponsor it, host it, or bring the problem.

Who you would be working with

Hack Collective Hamburg is a student-run community. We meet in person every other week at Universität Hamburg and run a machine-learning challenge together: everyone gets the same data, submits predictions, and watches a live leaderboard on the projector until the podium is revealed at the end.

The people in the room range from students who have never opened a notebook to ones who train models for fun. We want to be open to all levels of experience, and believe that everyone learns something new in the process.

We are not a recruiting service and this site is not a talent pool. We want to create a space for collaboration and learning, and help Hamburg establish a strong community of technical talent.

Three ways to take part

In practice partners cover all of these, however you could also choose to do just one, or a combination of them.

  • Sponsor an evening

Cover the pizza, the drinks and the prize for the podium. It is not a large sum, and it is the difference between an evening people stay at and one they leave hungry.

  • Host us in your office

We need a room with a big screen or projector and space for roughly thirty people for about three hours. We bring the platform and our community, and you're welcome to take part.

  • Bring a real dataset

The strongest evenings are built on a problem someone actually has. We take a dataset you can share, turn it into a challenge, and you present the problem at the start.

What an evening looks like

While this is our standard format, we can adapt it to your needs and wishes.

  1. A host opens the event and everyone joins on the platform via a code.
  2. The problem is introduced, by us or by you, in about ten minutes.
  3. Participants get the training data and a blind test set, and start building.
  4. Predictions are submitted through the site and scored automatically by our system.
  5. The leaderboard updates live on screen, then goes dark for the last ten minutes.
  6. Finally, the podium is revealed and the winners are announced.

What we bring

  • The platform: joining, data delivery, scoring, the live board and the reveal.
  • A host who runs the evening and keeps it moving.
  • The turning of your problem into a scored challenge, including the held-back test set.
  • The public event page, and the announcement to the community.

What we would need from you

  • A dataset you are able to share, if you are bringing the problem.
  • A room and a projector, if you are hosting.
  • A small budget for organization, pizza, drinks and a prize for the podium.
  • About a month of time, so the challenge can be prepared properly.
